We visited the Al-Nawaz over the weekend with some friends, who are regulars and recommended us to join them to taste the delights that are on offer. Me and my partner are curry lovers and have tasted our fair share from around the country, as well as abroad. Let me share my experience with you readers.
As we entered the curry mile, we were dazzled by all the neon lights, what a sight. As we opened our window to hear the hustle and bustle, we were welcomed by the lovely aromas that sent my taste buds soaring!!! What an experience.
As we walked to the Al-nawaz, it was being like on holiday, we were kindly offered by a number of restaurants free Poppadoms and a glass of wine, as well as some attractive discounts, very tempting if I may say so, however we had already made our mind up to visit the Al-Nawaz.
We finally arrived to our destination after dodging a number of offers and were welcomed by the doorman to a bright clean orange and white interior, look out for the fish tank that you can walk over in the entrance, wow!!. The restaurant was almost full and we were seated after a 10 min wait. Poppadoms and five different relishes were put on our table which we got tucked into straight away, washing them down with a nice cold refreshing Cobra beer, which enticed my appetite even further.
We ordered a selection of starters and different main courses which we were going to share. The starters arrived in sizzling platters hissing away, at the same time letting off gentle aromas which were very pleasing as well as appetizing, I like the way they put freshly sliced onions in the sizzler, so you can squeeze fresh lemon juice on them and fry them yourself, (a great treat).
The main courses tasted even better, each one garnished with fresh coriander and wedges of refreshing ginger stems. These were accompanied with a selection of rice and nan breads, my favourite was the onion kulcha garlic nan which was a nan baked with diced onions, garnished with a creamy garlic butter sensation. I stayed with the normal aromatic pillaw rice, although we also ordered a mushroom and a cashew nut rice, which my partner enjoyed more. All the dishes had their own unique flavours and textures.
After our meal the Manager came up to our table and asked if we would like to see some magic? Our friends did tell us that the Manager Salim is also a Professional Magician. He did card tricks and various table magic which were amazing, mesmerizing us in an awesome way, which felt great.
Pleasant evening and great value for money. The next time we are in Manchester we will be back. I hope you enjoyed reading about my experience and it was nice sharing it with you.

Ps Highly recommend the Al-Nawaz to anyone who knows what a real curry is.

I visited last week with some mates but now wish i had read the reviews from this site. I'm afraid the cockroaches have returned. Now in the males toilets. I can't help but think that they nay also be lurking around the kitchen.
Terry - 09 February 2009
We first visited this restauraunt 3 years ago we were seated by the door, which to say the least was breezy. i ordered a sizzler, our food arrived and i was given a bowl of sauce-no sizzler in sight- we mentioned this to the doorman as no waiter had passed, he called over a waiter who proceeded to stir my bowl of sauce, telling us that the meat was in it, when he realised it wasn't he got us both fresh drinks (flat cola) eventually (half an hour later) my sizzler arrived everything else had gone cold by now, after speaking to a man we assumed was in charge we left, hungry!
We vowed never to go back.
Then recently my other half went there on a staff 'do' and discovered that it had gotten much better, so he took me and leaving aside the toilets (which are not nice) everything is fab, the service is quite unorganised but the staff are really nice and the food is fresh.

I was concerned about this restaurant after reading reviews on this website, but i found no problem at all with it!... i had a lamb rogan josh and it tasted quite nice, the price was good, the service was good.
It was much better than what i had anticipated, so things may have improved now!

I have visited the al nawaaz on several occasions and the food has been superb but on last visit 18/07/08 really disappointed. Food was luke warm and not as tasty as previous occasions. Also quite greasy. The hot sizzle plates were luke warm also. I had fish tikka main meal and the fish was very boney and slim where previously they had been lovely thick white fluffy fillets on a bed of sizzling onions. These were slim, cold and boney. Will be trying somewhere else next visit.

Myself and my partner go here often, we think it is up there with the best in Rusholme
Phil, Wythenshawe - 10 June 2008

john - 15 May 2008 | |
My boyfriend and i have been here on several occassions and the food is good, however last time as another review states, I saw a huge cockroach in womens toilets, this was about 4 months ago, as we have not been here since- for this reason.
Helen + James - 25 April 2008
We have been to the Al Nawaz a few times in the past when the food was great as well as the service. On our last visit, pardon me for saying, the food was awfull at the same time my wife spotted a huge cockroach lurking around in the womens toilets. As you can imagine, that is a really big put off. We didn't finish our meal and not once were we asked how the food was. Anyway, we paid the bill and left quietley without drawing attention to the huge cockroach that is still probably lurking in the toilets. We will never eat here again and will tell all our friends to please keep away from the Al Nawaz.
Ps You could do with more polite staff, not that it matters to us anymore.

Where has your resident Magician dissapeared to??? We came specially to see him as it was my girlfriends birthday. A big let down at the same time the food was not how it usually was and very small portions if I'm being honest.

We went to eat at this establishment 2 days ago and were very dissapointed at the food and service. The pappadoms were stale and had a very bitter taste, one that lingers in your mouth for the rest of the evening. The main courses were very small and tastless. What a dissapointment and a big let down considering that we were reccomended to go there by a close friend. Maybe it was one of those days when they were short staffed and the chef was in a bad mood. Whatever it was, first immpressions are the last ones. We will not be returning and definately not reccommend you to anyone unless we want to be insulted by our reccomendations. SORRY!
Mr & Mrs Smith - 04 April 2008
I used to be a regular at the Al Nawaz, but latley the place has changed staff and the service as well as the food has dropped. Now I see they have a problem with COCKROACHES. It is a shame as it used to be one of the best at one time. I am sorry but I will no longer be a customer of yours and will defo not reccommend you to anyone.
John Prockter - 31 March 2008
Food is average, portions sizes are below average and the service is about standard for the mile (but pretty poor by normal restaurant standards)
The toilets are awful, and personally i found the bring your own booze thing meaning it felt like i was eating a takeaway in my lounge with everyone swigging cans around me..
All in all about par for the curry mile, cheap and cheerful curry with poor service
Keesey - 30 March 2008 | |
Was disappointed in restaurant following reviews. Has a really good offer for a Sunday, £6.50 for 5 course meal- ( any starter under £2.00, main meal under £6.00, poppadoms, pilau rice and coffee) The food was OK- not brilliant- the Lamb Rogan Josh from my local takeaway is far superior. The biggest put off was a cockroach in the ladies toilet, couldn't really enjoy my meal after that so asked to take it away. Sorry!

We regulary come to this restaurant especially to see Salim the resident Magician. When we asked where he was, we were told that he is on holiday. However, since then I have been told he has left the company. What a let down. Please please bring him back. A major attraction to the Al-Nawaz.

Food good but the service was terrible. We waited 2 hours for our meal and never got to see the Magician which everone is talking about. A big let down and we wont be going there again.
James and friends - 10 March 2008
We dropped in here on Sunday night for a meal as it got fairly good reviews on this site. The starters were nice but not exceptional -I had the mixed grill. our main dishesof Chicken Pindi and Chicken tikka karahi arrived half an hour later which I thought was slow as there was only 3or 4 other tables occupied. Our first impresions were that the portions were small but they were tasty and well cooked. Overall I would rate this restaurant as average to goodand I suspect the service would be much slower during busy periods.
I cant believe that this is the best restaurant in the curry mile. I will review others as we try them out. Rating 7/10. Thank you.

so much choice on curry mile but we happened to pick the best. we arrived about nine on a busy saturday night with a warm welcome. We were seated at the window were we wanted and the service was great. Top food, highly recommended!
mick accrington - 22 July 2007
I totally agree with Alan - Certainly the best Chilli chicken around! Al Nawaz is a regular with me and my friends and I would say 90% of the time the service is good but the food is 100% always!
sabs - 29 May 2007 | |
We came into the restaurant at 3am on Sunday morning and were given a very polite and warm welcome... the food was served quickly and was of very high standard...all 5 of us enjoyed our meals...and the price was very reasonable as well.... i fully recommend the restaurant to everyone who wants to experience the curry mile....

Went on Monday night. Good food and service was also good. Helpful waiters. Still not a patch on the Punjab (across the road, going away from the center) food-wise but a gem nevertheless.
Had a chicken vindaloo, reshmi nan and pilau rice. Vindaloo not that hot, nice idea that they put a few whole chilis in so you can make it as hot as you like - eat them or leave them! Good touch.

Al-nawaz is by FAR the best on the curry mile. We have tried a few and this beats them all. Lovely food always perfect, brilliant staff and super atmosphere. Me and my partner go regularly and have never been let down. Even when the restraunt is full our food only took 20 mins max and was served to perfection. As always!
Ruth - 20 January 2007 | |
We went to the Al-Nawaz on reccomendation. Food was OK, however, we never saw the magician that everyone is talking about. What a dissapointment.

AWFUL SERVICE
This is the second time I have been to this restaurant.
The first time we had to wait 40 minutes for our main course, with no apology or explaination.
this time we ordered at 19:30 and our food did not arrive until 22:00 (I asked whether this was a world record, but apparently not) despite us asking on numerous occasions. It was the same story with the drinks.
At the end of the night we refused to pay for our drinks (£17), as a result of their bad customer service. This resulted in one of the waiters swearing at us, and physically trying to restrain us.
This is the worst dinning experience I have ever had

I went here with my family , have 2 say that the food was excellent and the service exteremely fantastic!! A proper traditional asian style curry . will return.

Excellent, and one of the nicest Chilli Chickens I've ever had.
The food, service and price are spot on
Alan Field - 15 September 2006
we had takeaway from here, it was absolutely awful. the curry was oily and tasted burnt, very bland and boring food. we both felt quite ill the next day.
we much prefer Al Haweli
frenchboy&englishgirl - 11 September 2006
my wife and i have eaten here on six occasions and every time the food and service has been excellent , a must for curry lovers everywhere.
derek stuart - 28 May 2006
Average food, shabby interior, skanky toilets and the plates appear to have been nicked from Lal Haweli!!
Probably one of the worst curry houses on the mile.
Big Hank - 29 March 2006 | |
wtat an experience !!!! excellent service. mouhwatering food. love the open view kitchen and the fish in the floor. will be back.
jane - 28 March 2006 | |
Cold food, Menu boring, overcooked rice (Subtle favours lacking, lumpy and sticking), Deep fried samosa ( a little bit Glaswegian deep fried mars bars) enough said. Overall very overated better food in places like Oldham, Bolton
John C - 19 March 2006 | |
Al Nawaz's friendly laid back staff complement an already good atmosphere. It was very busy, which says a lot about what others think! The food was above average and there was plenty of it! The price was good as well, very impressed. I have been twice and will return soon.
chris - 30 November 2005
me and my father went there yesterday,
but i take back the good things i have said about this place as this time it was awful.
they took an hour to take our order then another hour to bring the starters and then again another hour to bring the main.
but i wouldnt of minded to much if the food was good, which it wasnt, starters were small and flavourless and the mains were stale and cold.
But the worst thing of all was how we were treated, we were put on a hidden
away table (the first table from the entrance in the non-smoking area)
and completely ignored.
It seems that you have to be a student in here or a very rude middle class person to treated well.
prior to this i believed that the al-nawaz was the best restraunt left in rusholme, but now i will not return.
little john - 25 November 2005
Been to this place twice now and food, service and prices are excellent. Really dont know what some people go on about at all. They do a 5 course meal for £6.50 12 - 5pm, mon - sat. Well worth it. Chicken was very nice just for the record.
rusholme giddy girl - 25 August 2005
The chicken splintered like wood when you placed a fork into it. Terrible service. Rubbery popadums. Missed a dish from our order. Only saving grace was that they added the bar bill up incorrectly - or the beer is fookin' cheap !
Lee Mac - 16 August 2005 | |
Terrible food, even worse service. Once the food arrived (1 hour after it was ordered), it was cold and hardly edible. The chicken tasted liked rubber and the sauces may well have been scraped up from the floor on a dirty street. I advise people to stay well away from the place.
- 15 August 2005 | |
Love it, love it, love it! The food is the best I have ever had, and the prices are unbelievable for such quality. The Lamb Pindi is to die for, and the complementary popadums are a lovely touch, Staff are friendly and the service is good. Sometimes it gets rather busy and things may take a little longer than usual, but there are plenty of distractions if you book a window seat and gaze out onto the wonders of the the neon-lit curry mile!
chris - 20 May 2005 | |
Nice place. Always fairly busy. The head waiter is also a magician and has some pretty neat tricks. He randomly performs for diners when it's not very busy - either early or late.
